Launceston: Tasmania's Mountain Biking Playground

Launceston offers a surprising bounty of mountain biking trails, catering to all skill levels, right on its doorstep. From family-friendly tracks to adrenaline-pumping downhill courses, you won't be disappointed.

Here's your guide to conquering Launceston's mountain biking scene:

Where to Ride:

  • Hollybank Forest Reserve: Just a 20-minute drive northeast of Launceston, this reserve boasts 20km of trails. Beginners can enjoy the gentle "No Sweat" loop, while thrill-seekers can tackle the challenging "Juggernaut," a 10km downhill descent. Practice your skills at the on-site pump track and jump lines.
  • Kate Reed Reserve Nature Recreation Area: This reserve, located south of the city and only 10 minutes from the CBD, offers a 15km network of cross-country trails. The mix of unsealed tracks and duck-boarded paths caters to all experience levels, making it a great choice for families.
  • Trevallyn State Recreation Area: Across the top of Cataract Gorge, Trevallyn provides a taste of adventure close to the city. The "Stolen Spice Track" offers a flowing downhill run, while a combination of trails like "Sidewinder" and "Deadmans Knob" venture towards the gorge rim. Remember, these are shared-use trails, so respect other users.

Resources:

  • Launceston Mountain Bike Club (LMBC): The LMBC website provides valuable information on local trails, including difficulty ratings and trail descriptions.
  • Trailforks: The Trailforks website offers user-generated reviews, maps, and photos of mountain bike trails in the Launceston region.

Renting a Bike:

Several shops in Launceston offer mountain bike rentals catering to various needs. Look for shops near your chosen riding area for convenient pick-up and drop-off.

Safety First:

  • Helmets are mandatory for all riders in Tasmania.
  • Be aware of trail conditions and choose trails that match your skill level.
  • Let someone know where you're going and when you expect to be back.
  • Carry basic tools for fixing minor breakdowns.
  • Respect other trail users and follow trail etiquette.

Après Ride:

After conquering the trails, unwind and refuel at one of Launceston's many cafes or restaurants, then head back to your comfortable stay at Launceston Central Apartments. Share your mountain biking adventures with fellow riders and plan your next epic ride!
